The first amateur champion: An ‘interview’ with Horace Hutchinson. Part I
Horatio Gordon ‘Horace’ Hutchinson learned to play golf in the 1860s at Westward Ho! in North Devon and became one of the sport’s most prodigious early exponents in England. Having helped to establish the Amateur Championship his was the first name to be added to the trophy. More than 20 years later, he became the first English captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. A golfer, writer and teacher, Hutchinson was widely respected on both sides of the Atlantic. This is the first major interview he has given since his suicide, aged 73, in 1932.
